First Quilt Update

So I'm piecing together the top of my first quilt and, needless to say, it was illuminating. I had not anticipating things not lining up perfectly. I know, very silly. But that just means more scouring blogs for ways to get it right next time! I didn't really want to choose a quilt pattern, but rather just try piecing squares in the most basic way to see if this is something I can see myself doing. (Let's just say, I prefer sewing clothes.)

My First Baby Dress!

I know I was supposed to post skirt pictures, but I've been so productive this weekend, I found more things to share, like this dress! Despite being somewhat misshapen, it looks great in person! Embroidered linen has a coolness factor that makes up for the mistakes a bit (there are lots of them as it's my first baby dress). I used the Lotta Jansdotter pattern "Simple Dress" from her book Simple Sewing for Baby. Instead of making my own bias strips, I purchased double fold bias tape to prevent unnecessary headaches. I dislike following patterns and do better with improvisation (really, I'm just too hard-headed to follow directions). At any rate, voila.

Tomorrow, I'll try and swap out this photo for a better one. It's sleepy time and I can't be bothered quite yet!

Feline Intellect

Tonight, I finished two skirts and I plan on posting pictures of those tomorrow when there is daylight. But I felt like sharing what it's like sewing with Severus.

So, he generally inches his way in to my peripheral and peers down at my work. He appears to have a very critical eye.

But he is not merely satisfied with this. He feels the need to put his nose where it does not belong.

He does not appear to like my work.

First Quilt Project

I ordered a couple of Sandy Gervais Awesome charm packs the other day. I had the intention of making my first quilt with them. Lovely warm Autumn colors (shhh I know it's winter, but autumn is my favorite season) and a good sale at the Fat Quarter Shop made me select these.

As I've never made a quilt before, I deliberated over which pattern to use as my first. I had a couple of simpler ones selected but I eventually decided to simply design my own simple quilt, something intended to help me practice useful quilting skills. Tomorrow I'll post my progress.

Meanwhile, I'm getting over a 24-hour stomach flu bug or something of the sort. D: One thing after another this year already! So I'll be slow at it tomorrow, doubtlessly. ;)

Sewage, Explosions, and County Hospitals

Haha, that title sounds way more chaotic than things really were.

Friday night involved the master bedroom and bathroom overflowing with sewage waste. Have had clean up/demolition crews here everyday since. Every MORNING since. Saturday night concluded in murderously explosive glassware, resulting shards fused to the kitchen walls and appliances after it exploded. That one I'll explain. Someone in the house turned the stove top eye on for tea but turned on the wrong eye. That eye had a glass casserole dish on it. Welp, we heard an explosion and Josh's mom scream,"OH MY G-D." Needless to say, if anyone had been in the kitchen when it happened, they would of gotten glass through the eyes, face, chest, stomach, whatever. Ridiculous.

On Sunday, I woke up with inner thigh pain on the left upper side. Eventually I started to feel nauseated by pain that spread to my lower right abdomen and then to my side and ending in my mid to lower back. It was like menstrual cramps not a sharp pain, but about 3 times worse than the worst bed-confining cramps. Worst part was that the pain decided to climax while I was standing in Joann's buying some quilting goods. I couldn't drive home until the pain subsided somewhat. But every 15 minutes it roared anew. Josh was at work and I didn't think I could get to the doctors alone. I figured, "feh, 4 hours and he'll be done with work." Well, the pain lasted 5 hours total. By an hour before his return, it subsided.

We called the advice nurse today and asked for... advice. She told us to come in. Mind you, I've never been to a county hospital. I've been spoiled all of my life with proper health care. Well let me tell you, those days are over. Archaic equipment and four pregnant women to a triage room is ridiculous. But worse yet was the woman playing hip-hop ringtones from her cell phone then dancing around in the bed. Mind you, she was nearly 40, 28 weeks along and had just crashed her Scion into someone else. I'm not ageist obviously. I just think that kind of crap should be left to your teenage son, not a parent. Be respectful; there are people trying to control their level of pain in that room and it could not possibly help having to hear lo-fi hip-hop blasting all day.

They couldn't detect the source of the pain (this is the third time I've been incapacitated by pain, and nope, it's not round ligament pain) so the doctor ordered a comprehensive ultrasound to check my ovaries etc. to see if there are issues causing pain there,. Therefore, back to the hospital again Monday. Hopefully all is fine. :) Blood work clean, baby fine!

Rough weekend, but things always get better. :)

2011

It feels weird when I think to myself, "In 2011, I will be a mother." I feel so blessed and so ecstatic just thinking about it. I mean, I'm kind of a little freaked about labor and birth in terms of pain, but past that, all I can think is "I'm so excited, I want to see you, I want to hold you, let April come quickly." So I guess that brings me to my main resolution. I'd like to be an amazing mother. I know that means that I have to work on my depression and anxiety issues even more. Chances are that when the little one arrives, I will having so much to do that I will forget about many of my problems. I hope that the birth of my child signifies a new stage in my life. I suppose marriage and parenthood always do, but I hope that they are the catalyst to a happier me. For the first time in a long while, I am excited about the future.

In addition to working on the above, I have a goal practice Yoga at least 3 times a week and to work on sewing/crafting projects at least 3 times a week. Women are all about creation. Whether creating life, creating households, creating crafts, anything. I really want to work on channeling that this year, I guess.
